ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Joanne Culbreth

The Artisan Group is proud to announce this week's Artist Spotlight Feature is Joanne Culbreth of Happy Moose Garden Art!

HAPPY MOOSE GARDEN ART

We caught up with Joanne and asked her a few questions about her hand-painted garden art, and her experiences so far working with TAG. Here's what she said:
  • Tell us a little bit about your shoppe. I actually have shops (on both ArtFire and Etsy), but focus on my Etsy shop as that seems to be where the sales are. I opened this shop in the summer of 2009 with a few items and a full-time corporate job as a systems analyst. I decided to simply paint a worn out pot one day and brought it in to my office with a plant for my desk. The response was overwhelming, and since I enjoyed doing it so much I thought... 'WHY NOT?' Now the bulk of my business is wedding orders, wedding and baby showers, children's parties, garden parties, teas, you name it! The majority of my orders are large (50-100 pieces) so I am basically working 24 hours a day :o) I also get several orders for the children's personalized wall letters. The time is nearing (thankfully in part to The Artisan Group and the exposure from the {GBK} 2012 Oscars) that I plan to do this full-time!
  • What is your favorite piece from your shoppe and why?  This is one of the designs that went into the celebrity swag bags at the (GBK) Oscars gifting event, and I love making them. They've become more and more popular, and it's thrilling!
  • When you're not hand-painting your adorable garden art, what are your hobbies? Aside from painting, I love my elliptical machine and working out with music (I could not function without music... it is from God just as the gift of painting :o) I start my day each morning by sitting on my back porch listening to the ocean with a cup of coffee. The ocean is a full mile away, but I can hear it clearly very early in the morning... it's wonderful. I love to read, but I seldom have the time these days. My husband and I have 4 grown children between us, and two grandchildren. They are unique, and wonderful as is my mother who lives with us. There's nothing on Earth like a big crazy family.
  • What do you like best about The Artisan Group?  Speaking of big crazy families, The Artisan Group is an AMAZING group of artists whom I am honored to be a part of. To be a part of a group who supports one another, with simple things like 'likes' on FB, following on blogs, you name it... is wonderful! Those simple things we do for one another help build us up, and the gifting opportunities provided by TAG are nothing short of amazing. If you haven't signed up for one, I highly recommend it. There is nothing to build your confidence and your business like being able to say J.K. Simmons or Penny Marshall noticed my product (and now I have the photo's to prove it!) It builds your business locally and forces you right out of those boxes we sometimes hide ourselves in. I am a TAGGIE (and proud of it!)

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Jillian Anderson & Jenifer Gallagher

The Artisan Group is proud to announce this week's Artist Spotlight Feature is Jillian Anderson and Jenifer Gallagher of The Scarlet Robin!

_________________________________________
THE SCARLET ROBIN

We caught up with Jillian and Jenifer and asked them a few questions about their trendy jewelry line, and their experiences so far working with TAG. Here's what they said:
  • Tell us a little bit about your shoppe. Outside of what is on ‘our story page, The Scarlet Robin is really about giving our customers a voice to speak their mind, brag about their kids or loved ones, call out their initials, or wear something that expresses who they are and do all of this with an original design. You can pamper yourself with luxurious and weighty pieces that speak to elegance, sophistication, and just plain fun. I (Jillian) have always said that each design expresses a bit of Jenifer’s personality and gives our jewelry a unique twist that you don’t see anywhere else.
  • What is your favorite piece from your shoppe and why? Right now we both TOTALLY love our new oh baby! baby bump necklace. Why, you ask? It’s so darn cute!! How can you not love it? Seriously though, the little bump with a belly button that hangs freely above the bottom disc is something we haven’t seen out there and have totally fallen in love with. It’s irresistible!

  • When you're not handcrafting your sophisticated jewelry, what are your hobbies? Our hobbies are tied up in Scarlet Robin – we figured out how to make money doing our hobbies. Jen’s life outside of SR revolves around her two kids – they are practicing for a marathon at the moment. Jill’s life most recently involves a huge landscaping project in the front and back yard, a lot of sweat and sore muscles! Hmm, you could say that same about sweat and sore muscles for Jen’s marathon training, too.
  • What do you like best about The Artisan Group?  The uber-friendly group members and the supportive artisan community. Everyone is so friendly.
Jillian and Jenifer recently participated as a display participant in a luxury celebrity gift lounge on February 24-25, 2012 at The W Hotel in Hollywood, California, in honor of the The 2012 Academy Awards Nominees and Presenters.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Kristi Baker

The Artisan Group is proud to announce this week's Artist Spotlight Feature is Kristi Baker of The Nib and Quill!

_________________________________________
THE NIB AND QUILL

We caught up with Kristi and asked her a few questions about her Coptic journal line, and her experiences so far working with TAG. Here's what she said:
  • Tell us a little bit about your shoppe. The Nib and Quill was created out of my love of journaling and the strong need to create journals that represented the words within. As I was walking my journaling journey, I grew weary of having to buy cookie cutter store bought journals that all looked the same. I wanted something that represented me- with a strong vintage flair and handcrafted with intense attention to detail. There is something magical in taking something old and creating something new and beautiful. I bind the journals in the Coptic fashion. I was drawn to Coptic binding due to its strength, beauty, and storied history across the ages. My Etsy shop, The Nib and Quill, is my window to the world where I get to share what I love with people that are similarly inspired by the written word and want a special place to capture their thoughts. It gives me goose bumps to know that my journals have had the honor to be a part of weddings, capturing the memories of departed loved ones, capturing the quickening found in new relationships, and more.
  • What is your favorite journal from your shoppe and why? It is impossible to choose a favorite journal in my shop, but if forced, I would select one with a skeleton key. I love using vintage skeleton keys in my art. I can only imagine where they have been and what they kept safe.

  • When you're not handcrafting your intricate journals, what are your hobbies? When I am not dreaming or creating new journals, I am off to the outdoors. I am married to a nut when it comes to nature. He drags me, and our three kids, outside whenever possible, hiking here and there. We can be found in the Shenandoah Valley any given weekend, hiking, having picnics; unplugging and connecting with Mother Nature and each other.
  • What do you like best about The Artisan Group? The Artisan Group has been such a wonderful group for me. I was completely on my own with promoting my shop and had no idea what I was doing. Everyone in The Artisan Group takes each other under their wing and really helps each other with their business - a great example of collaboration and reciprocity. They truly want to see each other succeed and we all take great joy in each other’s achievements. It is so refreshing. We learn so much from one another. The relationships within The Artisan Group are very special to me - the celebrity gifting is just the icing on my cupcake!
Kristi recently participated as a display participant in a luxury celebrity gift lounge on February 24-25, 2012 at The W Hotel in Hollywood, California, in honor of the The 2012 Academy Awards Nominees and Presenters.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Wallace Kowrach

The Artisan Group is proud to announce this week's Artist Spotlight feature is Wallace Kowrach of The Exceptional Artisan!

_________________________________________
THE EXCEPTIONAL ARTISAN

We caught up with Wallace and asked him a few questions about incredible hand-crafted pen line and his experiences so far working with TAG. Here's what he said:
  • Tell us a little bit about your shoppe.   My shop only features a handful of my work. There’s simply so much that I don’t have the time to photograph all of it and put it online -- yet. It encompasses three lines: ballpoint, rollerball and fountain pens. An entirely new line -- not pen-related -- should be debuting within a month or two.

I have made pens out of all sorts of materials: wood, acrylics, marble and even computer circuit boards. Recently, I made a pen out of wood that has been radiocarbon-dated to be between 35,000 to 50,000 years-old. It comes with a certificate of authenticity I received from the supplier attesting to its age. Actually, it may even be older than that but radiocarbon-dating is only accurate up to 50,000 years. Just think about it. The dinosaurs had just packed up and left when these trees got preserved in a bog in New Zealand after the last Ice Age.

What many people don’t realize is that I don’t really design all my pens. My customers do. They know what they like and it’s my job as an artisan to take their design/idea and make it a reality.

Sometimes, it’s a real challenge to find out what kind of a pen they want because most people think they have no artistic talent and want to leave the design up to me. At that point I begin using a bit of reverse-psychology.

I’ll suggest some really outlandish color or material which usually gets an “Oh, God! No! I don’t like that at all. Can’t you do something in “xx” color?” That usually gets a dialogue going real quick and before you know it I have all the information I need to make the pen of their dreams.

They look at me sort of dumbfounded when I congratulate them on designing their own pen until it sinks in about what they’ve just accomplished -- their own pen design. It just goes to prove that there’s an artisan in each one of us just waiting to be discovered.

Besides getting paid -- which always helps -- is seeing the expression on their faces when I deliver the finished pen to them. It’s worth more than whatever they’re paying me for my work because I’ve just brought a smile to their faces. Making someone happy -- it doesn’t get any better than that.
  • What is your favorite pen in your shoppe and why?  Wow! That’s a tough one. If I had to narrow it down I’d say it’s the fountain pens -- especially my Paragon model. I know. I’m dating myself but the first pen I learned to write with was a fountain pen and I fell in love with it. Never did forgive the teacher when we “graduated” to ballpoints.

For me, fountain pens have an air of dignity and quality about them. I love the way the ink just flows effortlessly onto the paper and even the sound the nib makes as it traces its route across the page. It hearkens back to an era where penmanship mattered and great care was taken with each written message.
  • When you're not handcrafting these gorgeous pens, what are your hobbies?  Hobbies? Free time? H-m-m-m-m, what a concept! Can’t say I remember the last time I had any.

Well, if push came to shove, I’d say I’ve been an avid science-fiction fan from early childhood--before it was fashionable to admit to such a thing. I fell in love with Star Trek and have even been on several Star Trek cruises where I met most of the cast of all the different series.

The most memorable moment was a conversation I had with Tim Russ who starred in Star Trek Voyager. Majel Barrett Roddenberry overheard our conversation and joined in when she heard I worked for AAA, the auto club. She thought it was a good idea for her to join AAA since she drove an older car. I almost dropped on the floor laughing when Tim said to her, “Majel, you drive a Bentley. They’re not supposed to break down.”
  • What do you like best about The Artisan Group?  Right from the “get-go” I’d have to say it’s the camaraderie. Everyone supports and encourages each other to a degree that I’ve never encountered in other groups.

I’ve never felt self-conscious about asking the group a question. In fact, it amazes me when I post a question and get a response in less than a minute.

That brings up something about The Artisan Group that’s been puzzling me quite a bit. Doesn’t anyone in the group sleep anymore? Everyone’s always online helping each other. :-)

Seriously though, TAG has done wonders for me by providing access to areas I never dreamt were possible. It’s a real conversation-stopper whenever I mention to a potential client or distributor that my pens were one of the gifts given to celebrities at the (GBK) 2012 Oscars. They immediately listen to what I say a lot more closely. This has opened up doors for me that otherwise would have remained shut.

To paraphrase a credit-card commercial, “That’s absolutely priceless!”

EDENSONG ESSENTIALS

We caught up with Stephanie and asked her a few questions about her edible skin care line, and her experiences so far working with TAG. Here's what she said:
  • Tell us a little bit about your shoppe. I create edible organic skin care -- or skin food, as I like to call it - using raw, living, organic skin care ingredients that are literally edible foods. My journey into skin care formulation began with my first pregnancy, when I had that "ah-ha" moment, realizing it is just as important what we put on our bodies as it is what we put inside our bodies. My mantra became and is, "What is your skin eating?" There are literally thousands of ingredients available, but as a purist, my goal is to create products that truly emanate elegant simplicity through a process of balancing complicated formulations using the simplest forms of effective edible organics.
  • What is your favorite skin care product from your shoppe and why? Choosing a favorite is difficult, because I love all my products. In fact, they are the only products I use! I am never without my Rapid Remedy Lip Balm or Goddess Envy Moisturizer, because I could use them for just about anything in a pinch, from their intended use as a lip balm and moisturizer to all over moisturizing or bruises and cuts.
  • When you're not handcrafting your line of edible skin care products, what are your hobbies?   Gardening is an extension of my craft. I love growing herbs and flowers that can be used in my products. Photography is another fascination for me. Even though I am a complete amateur, I have fun taking photos, especially of nature, architectural designs and faces. Besides those passions, I enjoy yoga, bicycling, music, reading, interior design and just about anything crafty.
  • What do you like best about The Artisan Group? This extraordinary group of artisans is exceptionally supportive and nurturing. There is a sincere desire among the members to share resources and ideas with one another so that we all may reach our true potential and become successful. Of course, the fabulous opportunities for exposure can't be beat! I was fortunate enough to have my products featured with The Artisan Group in the 2012 GBK Oscars Gift Lounge prior to the Academy Awards. More recently my products were gifted to Tom Cruise and his family. I have also been fortunate enough to develop many real friendships within this amazing group of inspiring artists. It is an honor to be a member.

After the event, Rachel arranged to have the display necklace, as well as matching earrings sent directly to Mary.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Sheri Hall

The Artisan Group is proud to announce this week's Artist Spotlight feature is Sheri Hall of Oops I Knit It Again!

OOPS I KNIT IT AGAIN

We caught up with Sheri and asked her a few questions about her adorable line of knitted goodies, and her experiences so far working with TAG. Here's what she said:
  • Tell us a little bit about your shoppe. Right now in my etsy shop I carry mostly baby items. Hats, blankets, photo props. I have been wanting for the past year to branch out into some other sizes and I am hoping to have a mens and womens line up and running by fall! I'm excited about it! I have many ideas floating around in my head and now I just need to get them on my needles!
  • What is your favorite product in your shoppe and why? My favorite items vary quite often! Sometimes it is the newest thing that I have just made. Right now I think it is the headband I made for Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise  I just learned how to cable knit a few months ago and now I seem to want to cable everything I touch. So I have a feeling there might be a few cables in the fall line!
  • When you're not knitting these charming hats and blankets, what are your hobbies? As far as free time goes, I'm not sure I have any! I would love some tips for finding some free time! I do love to watch movies, which fits really well into my life right now since I sit around and knit, drink coffee, and watch movies. I also would love to read again at some point. I also love to decorate! That's what I did in my former life. My pre-knitting life. I also love to pick up other peoples junk and make it into something new and fun!
  • What do you like best about The Artisan Group? I love The Artisan Group for the many opportunities it gives us that would be close to impossible to do on our own. Everyone is also very helpful and supportive and willing to give constructive help and there doesn't seem to be a big competition amongst the artisans. I haven't come across anyone who wasn't excited for you when something cool happens or anyone who wasn't willing to answer some questions on whatever topic you have questions on. That's pretty awesome.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Pam Hurst

The Artisan Group is proud to announce this week's Artist Spotlight Feature is Pam Hurst of Pam Hurst Designs!

_________________________________________
PAM HURST DESIGNS
{website} www.pamhurst.com

We caught up with Pam and asked her a few questions about her artisan jewelry, and her experiences so far working with TAG. Here's what she said:
  • Tell us a little bit about your shoppe.  I create artisan jewelry. I just love gemstones and metals and have fun matching and creating pieces that compliment both. I consider my pieces very simple yet unique. One of the biggest compliments I get when doing shows is that my pieces are very "wearable", and ultimately that is my goal, to provide wearable pieces that bring joy to people. I have been infatuated with jewelry as long as I can remember.
  • What is your favorite piece of jewelry from your shoppe and why?  This pendant, Sun Circle Swirls, is my favorite. I love the design on the metal and the copper crystal has hints of pink in it and just goes with almost everything. I think it is a great piece for the upcoming summer.
  • When you're not handcrafting your line of artisan jewelry, what are your hobbies?  I love to read and be outside, hiking, enjoying nature, swimming.
  • What do you like best about The Artisan Group?  I have enjoyed the friendships and support that I have gained through The Artisan Group. I joined for the awesome opportunities that it allowed me to be a part of and the best unexpected benefit are the people and fellow artists that have become a big part of my support system.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Nathalie Girard

The Artisan Group is proud to announce this week's Artist Spotlight Feature is Nathalie Girard of NG Originals!

_________________________________________
NG Originals

We caught up with Nathalie and asked her a few questions about her stunning jewelry line, and her experiences so far working with TAG. Here's what she said:
  • Tell us a little bit about your shoppe.  I'm primarily a metalsmith and I create limited edition as well as one of a kind wearable pieces of art. I use various creative techniques to hand-make the components for my jewelry, from traditional smithing to using recycled fine silver in the form of Precious Metal Clay, and enamelling. I only use lead-free glass enamels, and I run a green studio as I recycle and/or upcycle all materials so nothing ever goes to waste. I also enjoy doing wire wrapped and chainmaille jewelry for something that is more portable, like while sitting in the backyard with my dogs on a sunny day, or while away on a road trip.

Using a wide range of techniques allows me to create unique components to suit the needs for my designs. I have a large inventory of supplies which allows me to let my creativity roam free. From time to time, I still use a few commercially-made jewelry components but that's only because I have those parts already in my inventory from when I started making jewelry, and I'm trying to use them up.

Over the years, I've dreamed up many jewelry designs, well before I started making jewelry, and I soon realized that the only way to really make my visions come true was to learn fabrication techniques, so I've taught myself traditional metalsmithing techniques, and metal clay handling as well as enamelling. I also took a local class to learn lampworking (the making of artisan glass beads), this way, I when I have a specific design idea in mind, or when a customer wants a specific custom design, I pretty much have most of the knowledge and tools to make it become reality. I like having this kind of creative freedom.
  • What is your favorite piece from your shoppe and why?  I have a few favourite pieces, but The Reef (necklace) stands out for me because it combines most of the techniques that I enjoy using when creating my jewelry designs: metalsmithing in the cold forged stick-links and fused fine silver oval links that make up the chain, PMC3 – Precious Metal Clay/recycled fine silver in the creation of the focal/pendant, and enamels in the pendant. I actually designed that particular necklace in my mind over 10 years ago when I lived in the Caribbean. I was not making any jewelry back then, but the design came together in my brain and it stayed in my mind all this time, waiting for the right time to come to reality. And, once I learned the necessary metal techniques and felt comfortable with my knowledge, I created the piece I had envisioned back then. That felt very empowering to me.

  • When you're not handcrafting your gorgeous jewelry line, what are your hobbies?   Oh boy, where to start... I think I have some type of addiction to doing things. I don't stop… OK, let's see: My first love... Cooking – I love to cook most everything from scratch, I wish I could have my own cooking show :), watching cooking shows (ha!), snuggling up with my dogs on the couch to watch movies, graphic design, photography, reading, gardening – I grow organic vegetables and fruits in my backyard, hiking/outdoors activities, kickboxing, weight lifting, and traveling. I don't have enough time to do everything, but when I can, I also enjoy knitting and doing paper crafts. When I have access to a lake or the beach: snorkelling, sailing, canoeing, fishing, beach-combing, body boarding, etc.
  • What do you like best about The Artisan Group?  The tremendous amount of peer support. Everyone is really dedicated to their business and very knowledgable. The combined wealth of knowledge that is available in the group is mind-blowing. Whether someone has a business question or needs feedback on the revamping of their branding, etc, there's always members available to answer and brainstorm solutions, etc. It's a top-notch group of very talented artisans. It's great to be part of such a fantastic and positive group!

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Lindsey Dufoe

The Artisan Group is proud to announce this week's Artist Spotlight Feature is Lindsey Dufoe of Afton Dufoe Photography!

_________________________________________
AFTON DUFOE PHOTOGRAPHY

We caught up with Lindsey and asked her a few questions about her unique photography, and her experiences so far working with TAG. Here's what she said:
  • Tell us a little bit about your shoppe.  I create conceptual photographs. My images are individual stories mostly executed through self portraiture and always finished in a square format. I use a DSLR camera, tripod, remote, and Photoshop to create my work, which is inspired by my love for the imagination and desire to see it live on in everyone, regardless of age. Prints are available through my website.
  • What is your favorite print in your shoppe and why?   I often consider my most recent photo my favorite because it most closely represents my current state of mind, so I'm always in love with what I'm working on behind-the-scenes. My favorite released image is "A Doll's Dilemma" because I'm really happy with how it turned out: pastel tones and lots of negative space due to the miniaturization effect. However, I would consider "Keeper of the Stars" my strongest and most popular image overall.
  • When you're not creating whimsical photography prints, what are your hobbies?  When I'm not creating new work or tending to business tasks, I love to spend time with my dog, go for walks, and watch movies. I'm also a big fan of cooking and travel. I think it's important to step away from your work regularly to refresh your perspective and take in new information. Nature, movies, and travel always inspire me in some way.
  • What do you like best about The Artisan Group?  I love that members of The Artisan Group are "in it together." There's such a sense of community that you sometimes forget you're a one-person business. I've definitely grown a lot as an artist and small business owner through the unique experiences that The Artisan Group has made available to me.
